Bratislava Airport Joins the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program
16. 06. 2025 – M. R. Štefánik Airport in Bratislava has joined the international Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, which helps bring attention to the needs of travelers with hidden disabilities.
Airport staff have been trained to recognize the meaning of the sunflower lanyard, which allows travelers to discreetly signal to those around them that they may require assistance, patience, or understanding—without having to verbally explain their situation.
Not all disabilities are immediately visible. Hidden disabilities include, for example:
- autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), Asperger’s syndrome,
- attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),
- anxiety and panic disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
- epilepsy, migraines,
- speech and hearing impairments,
- sensory processing disorders,
- neurodevelopmental disorders, and other health conditions that may not be apparent.
These conditions often affect children as well, who may be sensitive to noise, crowds, changes in routine, bright lights, or the stress associated with travel. Therefore, children with autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorders, or anxiety disorders often make use of the sunflower lanyard.
“Our priority is to create an inclusive and friendly environment for all passengers. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, already known at airports worldwide, is an important step forward also for Bratislava Airport in terms of accessibility and empathy,” said Dušan Novota, CEO and Chairman of the Board of M. R. Štefánik Airport.
Airport staff pay increased attention during check-in, at the boarding gate, in departure and arrival halls, and at other airport facilities. Passengers wearing the sunflower lanyard can also be offered assistance services, just like other travelers who are entitled to assistance at the airport.
