Skiathos

Skiathos Island is one of the most popular and beautiful islands in the Greek Sporades, located in the Aegean Sea. It is known for its stunning beaches, picturesque villages, lush vegetation, and rich history. Many people recognize it as the filming location for the movie Mamma Mia! or as an unusual place where you can watch planes land directly overhead on the beach.

Skiathos is a new summer destination for Ryanair, with flights starting from M. R. Štefánik Airport during the summer holiday season from June to September 2025.

Transport from the Airport to the City


The cheapest way to get from Skiathos Airport (JSI) to the city center is by bus, which costs 2 EUR per person. The bus ride takes about 15 minutes, stopping not only in the city center but also at nearby beaches.

Since the airport is only about 2 km from the city center, taxis are also a convenient option. Taxis wait for passengers directly outside the airport. A taxi ride to the city center costs approximately 10–15 EUR.

What to See on Skiathos Island


Beaches
Skiathos is famous for its fantastic beaches, considered among the best in Greece. Many of them feature soft white sand and crystal-clear waters. Some of the most popular beaches on the island are:

  • Koukounaries: Possibly the most famous beach on the island, located on the southwestern coast. It is surrounded by pine forests and offers great opportunities for water sports.
  • Banana Beach: Split into two sections (one with white sand and one with pebbles), it is very popular among tourists and known for its lively atmosphere.
  • Lalaria: A unique beach with white pebbles and beautiful rocks reflected in the crystal-clear water. It is only accessible by boat.

2. Skiathos Town
The main town of the island, Skiathos, is lively, picturesque, and full of narrow streets that lead to traditional white houses with blue shutters. The town is also known for its harbor, which features restaurants, cafes, shops, and a vibrant nightlife. Don’t miss a stroll along the beach promenade, where you can enjoy stunning sunsets.

3. History and Culture
Skiathos has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. It is known as the birthplace of the famous Greek writer Alexandros Papadiamantis, whose house is now open as a museum. The town and its surroundings are full of historical landmarks, such as ancient ruins, monasteries, and churches. A key site is the Castle of Skiathos (Kastro), an ancient town built on a steep slope. Though only ruins remain, it offers an incredible view of the surrounding island.

4. Vegetation and Nature
Skiathos is a very green island, covered in dense pine forests and various plant species. It is an ideal place for nature lovers, with many hiking trails that lead to hidden beaches, scenic viewpoints, and historic sites, allowing visitors to explore the island's flora and fauna.

5. Mamma Mia! Movie
Skiathos gained popularity as the filming location for the movie Mamma Mia!. Beaches like Koukounaries and other locations on the island appeared in this famous musical film, bringing much attention to the island. Many tourists visit Skiathos to see the filming locations.

6. Activities
In addition to beaches and nature, Skiathos offers a variety of activities:

  • Water sports: Kitesurfing, windsurfing, parasailing, and diving are just some of the water sports available on the beaches.
  • Hiking: The island has many hiking trails that lead to hidden beaches, beautiful viewpoints, and historic sites.
  • Boat trips: Many companies offer boat tours around the island, allowing you to discover mysterious beaches and rocky coves that are inaccessible by road.
