Baku

Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan and a modern metropolis on the coast of the Caspian Sea. The city combines oriental atmosphere, a historic centre, futuristic architecture, a seaside promenade, excellent gastronomy and a unique location between Europe and Asia. Baku is known for the contrast between old and new – from the stone streets of historic Icherisheher to the modern Flame Towers, which are among the city’s most distinctive symbols. The destination is ideal for a long weekend, a sightseeing trip and discovering the culture of the Caucasus.

Flights from Bratislava

You can fly from Bratislava to Baku with direct Wizz Air flights to Heydar Aliyev International Airport, with the airport code GYD. The direct air connection between Bratislava and Baku will operate from 28 October 2026 as part of the winter flight schedule. The flight from Bratislava to Baku takes approximately 4 hours.

Transport from the airport

  • Aero Express – Heydar Aliyev International Airport is connected with the city of Baku by the Aero Express line. The service operates 24 hours a day, and the journey from the airport to the city takes approximately 30 minutes. To use public transport in Baku, including Aero Express, you need a BAKU CARD, which can be purchased and topped up at machines near the stops.
  • Taxi / private transport – taxi services are available directly at the airport. This is a convenient option for travelling to your hotel or chosen location in the city. The journey by car to the centre of Baku takes approximately 25–40 minutes, depending on traffic and the final part of the city.
  • Transfer / shuttle – you can also use a pre-booked private transfer directly to your hotel. This option is practical especially when arriving later, travelling with larger luggage or heading to more distant parts of the city.
  • Car rental – you can rent a car directly at the airport. This is a suitable option if you plan trips outside Baku, for example to Gobustan, the mud volcanoes, the Absheron Peninsula or the Ateshgah Fire Temple.

When visiting Baku, you should definitely not miss these places and experiences:

  • Icherisheher – a UNESCO-listed historic walled Old City with narrow streets, palaces, mosques and oriental atmosphere.
  • Maiden Tower – an iconic tower in the Old City and one of the best-known symbols of Baku.
  • Palace of the Shirvanshahs – a historic palace complex in the heart of the Old City, one of Azerbaijan’s most important landmarks.
  • Flame Towers – modern skyscrapers shaped like flames, dominating the Baku skyline especially after dark.
  • Baku Boulevard – a long seaside promenade by the Caspian Sea, ideal for walks, relaxation and views of the modern part of the city.
  • Heydar Aliyev Center – a futuristic building designed by architect Zaha Hadid, known for its flowing lines and modern design.
  • Fountains Square – a lively city centre area with cafés, restaurants, shops and a pleasant urban atmosphere.
  • Gobustan – a UNESCO-listed archaeological site known for its rock carvings and unique landscape.
  • Mud volcanoes – a natural phenomenon around Baku and one of the most interesting trips outside the city.
  • Ateshgah Fire Temple – a historic temple on the Absheron Peninsula connected with fire and ancient religious traditions.
  • Azerbaijani gastronomy – taste plov, dolma, kebab, qutab, piti, baklava, black tea, local sweets and dishes with the flavours of the Caucasus and the Orient.
